But at heart, they areabout death and the pain that appears afterwards. Seamus HeaneysMid-Term Break is a memory of his four-year-old brothers death.Gillian Clarkes The Field Mouse is about death in a politicalconflict compared to a death in nature. at last On My First Sonne byBen Johnson is about the death of his son and the ghost desire view ofthe situation.Both Heaney and Johnsons poems are about the death of a scraggy lovedone and how it is dealt with emotionally and in reality. On looking atthe title of Heaneys poem, you almost immediately assume that is ahappy one, by chance about what he spends his holidays doing. This ofcourse is not the case.Unlike the other cardinal poems, you do not know immediately who has diedor even if on that point is a death. Throughout the poem he keeps us guessingwhat is happening. He gives us a clue and we see to piece it unitedlylike a detective putting a jigsaw puzzle together to solve a crime.Also the fact that it is a memory and he is talking about himself as achild shows how badly it would have affected him and his parentsemotionally. This really mixes your emotions and unlike the other 2makes you feel sorry for a death that happened over 20-30 years ago. Ialso feel it is better because it focuses on the actually death. whileHealey does fill in these criteria.Clarkes poem compares the kill of a field mouse to the killings inthe Bosnian War. Though this is clever, it does not show the badthings in the Bosnian War as in reality the killing of one field mousecannot really be literally compared to the massive killings involvingthe Muslims. The above reasons are why I think overall Seamus Heaneyspoem is the best.
